One interesting tid-bit: despite Wildthing saying his card runs hot, it's a good 15-20 degrees C cooler than mine while idle.

wow

Yeah.

Thinking about it, it's actually closer to 20-30 degrees cooler. This card hovers around 45-50 C while mine was around 70-75 C, maybe 65 at the coolest.

In the interest of fair comparison, the card you have now is an 8800GT with an aftermarket] cooler installed, your old one was a 9800GT which was still stock cooled.

Ah. I still find it interesting that even though you said it ran hot it's still so much cooler.

~75 C is, from what I've read, average for the 9800 GT. I think I'll look into the aftermarket cooler RM mentioned on the first page.

I've got a Xion Onyx case.

Is your card made by XFX too? Because the fan on theirs is, frankly, pretty small compared to others.

Also, If I remember correctly that old card of mine (8800GT OC?) is also slightly overclocked by default.

Update:

XFX has found my card to be faulty (again). This time, according to them, it passed most tests before eventually failing. They still seem to think it's something else in the system that caused it. I'll probably end up getting a new PSU as that's the most likely culprit.

To be honest I expected that card I gave you to have flaked out by now b/c of poor power supply........me thinks maybe they just keep sending you crap refurbished cards now.............that 8800 is a power hog

Yeah, they didn't tell how it failed, just that it eventually failed. I'll ask and see what they can tell me about the tests and what they think may have caused it to fail that's not the card. I personally think I just got a bad replacement. The original was probably just an eventual failure due to over-heating because of it's small fan. If you look at the comments for it on Newegg, a lot of them talk about the poor fan design and how it runs hot. But again, I'll see what XFX has to say.
